Visits to Jamaica are – in the most part – trouble free. However, there is an ongoing problem with violence in the country, and whilst it isn’t as bad as it is made out to be, there is a risk of robbery, mugging and even violent crime. Having said this, the majority of violent crime is political or drug-related, and so does not affect tourists. Another minor annoyance comes from street vendors and hustlers, who will harass any tourist that walks past. A simple, firm “no” will do the trick though – and remember, a lot of Jamaicans are poor people, they’re just trying to make a living. It should also be noted that marijuana is not legal, contrary to popular belief, and penalties for possession can be harsh. Just say no. HIV/AIDS is prevalent in Jamaica – appropriate precautions are advised. Water is generally chlorinated and safe to drink, but may cause stomach upsets – bottled water is available and recommended. Meat, vegetables, fruit and dairy products are safe for consumption.
